Treatment Options for Correcting Misalignment of Teeth

Crooked or misaligned teeth are an extremely common dental problem that can be corrected using a variety of dental treatments. Understanding what dental treatment will be best for you however, is the tricky bit.

How crooked teeth occur

Crooked or misaligned teeth occur naturally for various reasons. Some people are born with mouths which are too small for their teeth resulting in crowded teeth ultimately causing them to shift in order to make room for each other. Additionally the lower or upper jaws may also be malformed resulting in an under bite or overbite.

An overbite is when the upper set of teeth protrudes over the lower set and an under bite is when the lower jaw protrudes over the upper one. A cross bite on the other hand occurs when both are misaligned and the upper teeth bite on the inside of the lower teeth. All cases often lead to difficulty in normal function of the teeth and result in wear and tear. Jaw and joint problems are also fairly common.

Treatment options

There are multiple dental procedures available to correct crooked teeth.

Veneers

These are a long term solution to correct crooked teeth. Porcelain veneers may even be used to correct gapped, misaligned, stained, chipped or broken teeth. Made from porcelain material they can be used for a period of 20 years. They are typically custom made according to the patient and are typically about .1 mm thick. This method however is expensive and the porcelain is prone to chipping and cracking over time.

Bonding

This is a tooth reshaping procedure in which a quartz and resin mixture is applied on the surface of the natural teeth. This material is sculpted by the dentist to give a natural and smooth look which blends well with the original teeth. This method also requires proper care since its prone to stains and sensitive to high pH and pressure levels. Although cheaper, it is not recommended for individuals whose diet consists of a lot of acidic foods.

Six Month Smiles Cosmetic Braces System

This is an extremely convenient solution for crooked teeth which is more prevalent among adults with misaligned teeth. This is because it corrects your teeth only after a period of 6 months. This procedure implements innovative technology and techniques in order to reduce the time required for the application of braces. This accelerated braces treatment does not tighten regular braces but rather utilizes low force to move teeth gently.

The system also uses clear braces which are barely visible in order to maintain appearance even during treatment. This has made it a popular choice among adults.

Reconstruction of the jaw

This is for more severe cases of crookedness in which the jaw is misaligned due to disproportionate bone growth. The doctor will make incisions in the jaw in order to correct its placement. Since the patient needs to be anesthetized for the treatment, the doctor may ask them to stay for another day for observation. This surgical procedure is usually done as a last resort and only for severe cases.
